To Sleep Perchance to Dream

If you recognize that line (and you should, hello English class!) you’ll know it’s actually a reference to the eternal sleep.  I’m not wishing death upon myself, I just enjoy the quote.

Tonight is the big night.  I had about 3-4 hours of sleep last night and wasn’t permitted to have more than a Pepsi Max and a Coffee this morning.  No napping after work, no caffeinated beverages to keep me awake and focused.  I’ve been doing my level best to keep my eyes open and my mind sharp.

Why?  A sleep test.  I’ve got to spend the night at the hospital and I’m not looking forward to it at all!  I don’t like hospitals.  I suppose that’s natural, a lot of people are afraid of them.  There’s something about that smell…like disinfectant and sterility trying to overpower the musk of illness.  It’s hard enough to sleep in the hospital on a regular occasion (I’ve only managed it after being sedated after my surgeries, otherwise I’m awake and restless) but when you’ve got machines and wires hooked to your face?  It makes my skin crawl.

The test is to see if I have sleep apnea.  Fun!  I actually have some symptoms of apnea, narcolepsy and restless leg.  Part of me wants them to find absolutely nothing at all.  Then again, where would I be?  Sleeping my days away.  If they found something, it could be treated.

Mind you, the mask system costs around 2k.  The anti-sleep pills on the market right now aren’t available in generic form (another 3-5 years), aren’t covered by a plan and the cost runs somewhere in the ballpark of $80/month.  They don’t fix the problem, just sort of stave off that whole nodding off business.

Wish me luck!
